GTA 6 Map Size: What's Confirmed and What's a Leak
There's no official GTA 6 map size — and none for GTA 5 either. Here's the ~2x estimate, leaked interior counts, and what content farms state as fact.
Core figures are analyst estimates, not official numbers. How we tier claims →
TL;DR
- Rockstar has never published an official GTA 6 map size, and it never gave one for GTA 5 either.
- The popular “twice the size of GTA 5” figure is a fan estimate from trailer footage, not a Rockstar number.
- What’s confirmed is the geography: the state of Leonida, with six named regions built around Vice City.
- Leaked counts of 700-plus interiors and 1,400-plus points of interest are leak-sourced, not official.
- A real number arrives only with an official reveal or hands-on previews. Those are what to watch.
Type “gta 6 map size” into any search box and the first result hands you a confident number. Ignore it. Rockstar has published no official figure for the size of the GTA 6 map, and here’s the part that surprises people: it never published one for GTA 5 either. Every square-mile stat you’ve seen for both games traces back to fans with mapping tools, not to a Rockstar spec sheet.
That doesn’t mean we know nothing. It means the job is to sort the confirmed geography from the estimated acreage, and to label each one honestly.
Confirmed Published by Rockstar
- No map size figure of any kind — no square miles, no square kilometers, no "X times bigger" claim
- No official area figure for GTA 5 either, in over a decade
- The setting: the state of Leonida, a fictionalized Florida
- Six named regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Mount Kalaga, Ambrosia
- Trailer 2 footage, captured in-game on PS5, showing beaches, city streets, wetlands and highways
Unconfirmed Fan estimate or leak-sourced
- The headline "roughly twice the size of GTA 5"
- 700-plus enterable interiors (September 2022 leak)
- 1,400-plus points of interest (September 2022 leak)
- GTA 5's own "49 square miles" — a community measurement, never a Rockstar number

What we actually know about the GTA 6 map size
Officially, the number is blank. Rockstar has released two trailers, a batch of screenshots, and a synopsis, and not one of them carries a measurement of any kind. There is nothing to cite because nothing has been published.
This is normal for Rockstar. The studio has never sold its games on cartographic stats. Even GTA 5, a game people have played for over a decade, has no official area figure — the Los Santos number quoted everywhere is the community measurement noted above. So when a site tells you GTA 6 is a precise size, the fair question is: measured by whom, against a GTA 5 baseline that was never official to begin with?
The state of Leonida and its named regions
The six names above are the whole of the confirmed geography, and they come straight from Rockstar’s trailers and its own site: a fictionalized Florida called Leonida, built around a modernized Vice City. We break each region down, with Rockstar’s own copy for every one, in every GTA 6 location confirmed so far.
Those names tell you more about scale than any leaked figure. Keys imply an island chain. Grassrivers reads as an Everglades analogue, all wetland and swamp. Port Gellhorn suggests an industrial coast. Mount Kalaga puts real elevation on the map, which Los Santos had but which a flat Florida wouldn’t get for free. That spread, from dense city to keys to swamp to port to high ground, is a wider variety of terrain than GTA 5 opened with. Variety and raw area aren’t the same thing, but the region list is the strongest confirmed evidence that Leonida is built to feel large.
The two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, move through the whole state rather than a single city. Trailer 2, which Rockstar captured entirely in-game on PS5, showed beaches, city streets, wetlands, and highways in a single cut. That footage is the raw material every fan estimate is built from.
For comparison, GTA 5 launched with one city, Los Santos, and its surrounding Blaine County. Leonida is described as an entire state, and Rockstar’s GTA 5 world grew over years of Online updates without the base landmass ever changing. If Leonida ships with six distinct named regions on day one, the starting canvas is already broader than what GTA 5 offered at launch, before anyone measures a single mile. That’s a structural point about the design, and unlike the acreage estimates, it doesn’t depend on a stopwatch and a trailer freeze-frame.
The ~2x GTA 5 estimate, and where it comes from
Now the number everyone actually came for. Every figure in that right-hand column is a fan estimate. They’re built by measuring landmarks in trailer footage, timing how long a vehicle takes to cross a visible stretch, and cross-referencing the 2022 leak’s map data against the confirmed region names. That’s genuinely clever work, and the people doing it are careful. But it’s reverse-engineering from seconds of video, not a readout from Rockstar.
The estimates also disagree with each other, which is the tell. If there were an official figure to check against, they wouldn’t need to. Treat “about twice GTA 5” as a reasonable community consensus and nothing firmer. It might be right. It has no official backing.
There’s a second trap inside the number: what counts as “map.” GTA 5’s 49-square-mile figure includes a large stretch of open ocean, so a chunk of that acreage is water you can only boat or fly across. If a GTA 6 estimate folds Leonida’s coastline, keys, and wetlands into the total the same way, the headline figure balloons without adding drivable ground. When two estimates disagree, this is often why: one is counting the sea, the other isn’t.
The leaked interior and POI counts
Two more figures make the rounds: 700-plus enterable interiors and 1,400-plus points of interest. These come from the September 2022 leak, when a large batch of pre-release development footage and data escaped from Rockstar’s internal systems.
Leak-sourced numbers deserve extra caution for a specific reason: they’re old. The 2022 material came from an early build, and interior counts are exactly the kind of thing that shifts across years of development. A figure that was true for a 2022 test build tells you little about the November 2026 game. For scale, GTA 5 shipped with only a small fraction of its buildings actually enterable, so a jump to hundreds of open interiors would be a real design change, which is part of why the number spread so fast. Compelling doesn’t mean confirmed. We report these counts as leak coverage because they’re part of the conversation, not as features Rockstar has stood behind.
What content farms get wrong about map size
Search results for map size are a case study in false precision. You’ll find headlines announcing the size is “officially confirmed,” articles that state 2x GTA 5 as flat fact, and aggregators that weld a fan square-mile figure to Rockstar’s name as if the studio published it. None of that holds up.
The move these sites make is subtle. They take a real fan measurement, strip the “estimated” label off it, and present the result in the confident voice of settled fact. The next site cites them, and the laundering compounds until a Reddit thread’s best guess is being quoted as a Rockstar spec. It’s the same mechanism that turned GTA 5’s unofficial “49 square miles” into a number people genuinely believe came from Rockstar.
The honest version costs nothing: the map is confirmed to cover the state of Leonida across six named regions, and it’s estimated by fans to run roughly twice the size of GTA 5. That sentence is the whole truth, and it’s more useful than a fabricated decimal.
What would give us a real number
Three things could turn the estimate into a fact. A future trailer or official Newswire post could include a map, the way Rockstar released a full paper map for GTA 5 near its launch; measure that and you’d have something real. Hands-on previews from press, which historically land in the weeks before a Rockstar release, would let reporters describe travel times and scale from actual play. And the launch itself, on November 19, 2026, settles the whole question the moment players can drive the borders.
Until one of those arrives, anyone quoting you an exact GTA 6 map size is selling confidence they don’t have. The geography is real and specific. The acreage is a well-educated guess. Keep the two straight and you already know more about the map than most of the internet does.
