GTA 6 First Trailer Recap: What Dec 2023 Showed

TL;DR

Two dates circulate for the debut, and both are first-party: the YouTube premiere was December 4, 2023, while Rockstar’s own Newswire post is dated December 5. This recap runs on December 4.

Guinness certified 90,421,491 views in 24 hours. The widely quoted 93 million figure is a later tally and cannot be attributed to Guinness.

What it established: a criminal pair and a setting — modern-day Vice City inside the state of Leonida. The names Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos come from Rockstar’s official character page, a separate act on a separate date. No release date, no price.

What followed: the next beat in the campaign this trailer kicked off was An Extended Look, which premiered on August 27, 2026 and runs 26:49. Rockstar does not call it Trailer 3.

Two things about the first GTA 6 trailer still get reported wrong nearly three years on: when it landed, and how many people watched it. Both have clean answers, and this page is where we keep them.

December 4 or December 5? Both, and here is why

Rockstar’s Newswire post for the debut is dated December 5, 2023. The trailer itself premiered on Rockstar’s YouTube channel a day earlier, on December 4, and the upload metadata carries that date.

Neither is wrong. They are two first-party records of two different events — the video going live, and Rockstar writing about it — and that is precisely why the discrepancy has proved impossible to kill. Outlets working from the Newswire archive date it December 5; anyone working from the video dates it December 4. This recap runs on December 4, because the premiere is the thing being recapped.

The certified 90.4 million, and the number that is not certified

Guinness World Records certified 90,421,491 views in the trailer’s first 24 hours: the most-viewed videogame reveal trailer on YouTube in that window.

The figure you will more often see is 93 million. That one traces to later tallies rather than to the certification, and the two get used interchangeably as though a record body and a view counter are the same kind of evidence. They are not. Guinness certified a number at a moment; YouTube’s counter kept going. If a page quotes 93 million and credits Guinness, it has merged two sources into one claim.

Guinness logged three titles in all, per its own write-up of the records: most-viewed videogame trailer on YouTube in 24 hours, most-liked videogame trailer on YouTube at 8.9 million likes in that window, and most-viewed non-music YouTube video in 24 hours. The mark it beat on that last one was MrBeast’s 59.4 million from August 2023, and it beat it by more than 30 million in a category nobody expected a game trailer to enter.

For scale: it did that with a single short clip that named no release date and no price.

One more number to keep straight. The trailer’s running lifetime total — roughly 287.7 million views when we checked it on July 22, 2026 — is not the record figure. Guinness certified the first 24 hours; a lifetime counter is a different measurement, and the two get swapped constantly.

What the debut actually established

The confirmed content is tight, and it is the load-bearing reveal Rockstar has built everything since on top of: two leads rather than one, set in a modern-day Vice City inside the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s own first description calling it “the neon-soaked streets of Vice City.” The names attached to that pair — Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, with Lucia fresh out of Leonida Penitentiary — come from Rockstar’s official character page, not from this trailer. It ran on Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road.” The full sorted detail list, music included, is in every GTA 6 trailer detail you missed; the cast is in gta 6 main characters.

What matters for a recap is the line between that and everything attributed to it since. Named regions like Leonida Keys and Grassrivers, the size of the map, specific gameplay systems — none of it was in this trailer. Rockstar has since made the region names official on its site, which is a different act on a different date. The map-size figures never became official at all.

What the first trailer did not show

It named no release date, no price and no editions, and Rockstar made no gameplay claim for it. Platforms came only as a “Coming 2025” line for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a window that eventually landed on November 19, 2026.

It also named no antagonist, and Rockstar still has not — the case is in the GTA 6 antagonist. Anyone telling you the debut revealed a villain is reading faces into b-roll.

What to watch

The first trailer’s job is done, and the next beat has since happened. Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 6, 2026 without calling it Trailer 3 and without a runtime, and premiered it on August 27. The official upload runs 26:49. For this page specifically, the thing to watch is whether the coverage around that footage repeats the two errors above — quoting an uncertified view count as a certified record, and treating a Newswire timestamp as a premiere date. Both are already happening to a trailer from 2023.
