GTA 6 vs Cyberpunk 2077: 7 Lessons From a Broken Launch

GTA 6 vs Cyberpunk 2077 is not a quality comparison yet. It is a comparison of launch bets, and one of them already cost its publisher millions of dollars.

Where we stand

The figures below are estimates, not Rockstar or Take-Two numbers. Where a figure comes from a named source, we name it at the figure.

What would change it: a Rockstar Newswire post or a Take-Two filing that contradicts the sourcing here. When one lands we rewrite the piece and log it — see the corrections log.

TL;DR

  • GTA 6 vs Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t a quality comparison yet. GTA 6 isn’t playable. What’s comparable is how each was brought to market.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, got pulled from the PlayStation Store, and cost CD Projekt a $1.85 million investor settlement.
  • It recovered. Patch 2.0 rebuilt the game’s core systems in September 2023, days before the paid Phantom Liberty expansion.
  • Rockstar moved GTA 6 from May 26 to November 19, 2026 and cited polish. That is the opposite bet, taken in public.
  • Take-Two’s Q1 FY2027 results, out August 7, 2026, restated November 19 and held FY2027 net bookings guidance. Rockstar’s An Extended Look has since premiered, on August 27. The next dated event is the November 19 launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the reason “it’s delayed” stopped sounding like an insult. Its December 2020 launch produced one of the most public failures of the modern open-world era, and the repair job took the better part of three years. That is the useful frame for GTA 6 vs Cyberpunk 2077: not which game is better, since one of them isn’t playable by anyone outside Rockstar, but which launch strategy each studio chose and what the first one cost.

Here are the seven comparisons that hold up on what’s actually known.

1. Cyberpunk 2077 shipped to hardware that couldn’t run it

The clearest signal in Cyberpunk’s story is the platform split. The reception on PC and the reception on last-gen consoles diverged so sharply that only one of the two produced a storefront removal and a blanket refund offer. Same game, same launch day, two entirely different reputations.

CD Projekt released Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020 on last-gen hardware among other platforms, and it was the PS4 build that Sony pulled. The game people played on last-gen consoles at launch was not the game the studio had been demonstrating.

GTA 6 does not have this exposure. Rockstar’s official game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. No PS4, no Xbox One, no cross-generation build holding the ceiling down. It also means no fallback: if the game struggles on Series S, there is no weaker platform to absorb the blame.

2. The delisting was the part that actually mattered

Bad reviews are survivable. What happened next was not routine. Sony removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store in December 2020 and offered full refunds to everyone who had bought it, a removal Game Developer reported at the time as unprecedented for a flagship title in the store’s decade of digital sales. Microsoft expanded Xbox refunds but kept the game listed.

The financial tail ran longer. Investors sued over CD Projekt’s statements about the launch, and in December 2021 the company agreed to settle for $1.85 million in exchange for a release of all claims, with no admission of liability. The sum was small next to the game’s reported production and marketing spend, but the precedent was the point.

That is the actual cautionary tale, and it isn’t about review scores. A platform holder pulled a flagship game from sale, and the publisher’s own shareholders sued over what they had been told about it. Every publisher shipping a huge open world since has been pricing that risk in.

3. What Cyberpunk 2077 got right, and still gets credit for

The redemption arc is real and worth being precise about. Patch 2.0 arrived in September 2023, free, and rebuilt the game’s core systems — skill tree, cyberware, police, vehicle combat, loot — shortly before the paid Phantom Liberty expansion arrived on September 26, 2023. A studio spent nearly three years rewriting systems it had already shipped.

Cyberpunk’s reputation recovered on vertical density: a compact map with an enormous amount packed into it, and a tightly written story inside it. That is our read, not a sourced consensus.

Grand Theft Auto’s historic strengths sit elsewhere: systemic simulation, breadth, and worlds that keep behaving when you stop paying attention to them. Comparing the two on “which open world is better” mostly reveals which of those things a player values. It doesn’t settle anything.

4. Rockstar’s GTA 6 delay is the opposite bet

GTA 6 has moved once. Rockstar named May 26, 2026 as its first dated commitment; the 2025 window that preceded it was a year, not a date, so nothing was broken when it lapsed. Then on November 6, 2025 Rockstar moved the date to November 19, 2026, saying the extra time would let the studio finish the game “with the level of polish you have come to expect.” The date has held since, through pre-orders opening June 25, 2026 and pre-load being set for November 12.

Read that against 2020. CD Projekt delayed Cyberpunk several times and still shipped a last-gen build that a platform holder pulled. Delay by itself proves nothing. What it buys is the option to fix things, and it costs a publisher real money to exercise, which is why a move announced roughly twelve months out, with pre-orders not yet open, is a cheaper and more credible signal than one announced on the eve of launch.

Whether Rockstar used the time well is unknowable from outside. We’ve covered what is and isn’t public about the game’s completion state in is GTA 6 finished, and the honest answer there is that Rockstar has announced nothing about gold status.

5. GTA 6 vs Cyberpunk 2077 on scope: two editions, one player

Both games are single-player products first. Cyberpunk 2077 shipped as a single-player game, and CD Projekt’s post-launch work went into patches and one paid expansion rather than an online mode. GTA 6 is officially described as a single-player experience, and Rockstar has announced no online mode, no date and no roadmap for one. For a series whose last entry earned most of its money from an online economy, that is a genuinely unusual launch posture.

The commercial packaging differs sharply. GTA 6 currently lists two editions, Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, with no Collector’s tier announced and no disc. Physical copies are a download code in a box. Pre-orders and purchases before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders add one month of GTA+.

Cyberpunk went the other direction over time: a paid expansion and years of free patches. Rockstar’s post-launch model for GTA 6 has not been described at all.

6. The numbers each game is measured against

Cyberpunk recovered. But the bar GTA 6 gets held to is Rockstar’s own back catalogue, not CD Projekt’s.

The catalog Rockstar is defending: Grand Theft Auto V has sold in 230 million units lifetime per Take-Two’s May 21, 2026 earnings materials, Red Dead Redemption 2 has passed 85 million, and the GTA franchise sits above 470 million. Those are sold-in figures — shipped to channel plus digital — not sell-through. GTA V grossed $1 billion in three days in September 2013, which Guinness World Records certified as the fastest entertainment property to reach that mark.

Take-Two’s own guidance is company-wide, not a GTA 6 forecast: FY2027 net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion covering the whole portfolio, with no portion of it attributed to this game. The unit numbers in circulation are all outside estimates. Piper Sandler models about 35 million units by April 2027; DFC Intelligence forecast 40 million in year one back in January 2025, before the final date or pre-order window existed. Both are outside projections, not company figures. The viral “39 million pre-orders” number that spread in late June traces to a single unsourced social post and has been fact-checked as unsubstantiated. Rockstar and Take-Two have released no pre-order figures at all.

7. What we still can’t compare

Everything that would make this a real head-to-head is missing on one side.

Rockstar has announced no resolution, no framerate, no graphics modes and no ray-tracing detail for GTA 6 on any platform. The 30fps-lock and 60fps-mode figures in circulation trace to leaks, podcast reports and analyst inference, not to Rockstar. The nearest thing to a technical record is storefront metadata rather than a Rockstar statement: a PS5 Pro Enhanced badge on Sony’s listing and an “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” badge on Microsoft’s. Neither carries published detail behind it.

Rockstar’s own history is the only guide. GTA 5 shipped at 30fps on console in 2013 and again on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014; the 60fps console modes came with the March 2022 current-gen release, which added Fidelity, Performance and Performance RT options. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched at 30fps on console in 2018 and we are aware of no current-gen 60fps console patch since. That is a pattern, not a prediction.

Rockstar has never published a map size for GTA 6 or GTA 5, which makes the popular “twice the size” comparison unverifiable in both directions. Rockstar has not confirmed any voice casting, and it has not named an antagonist. What is confirmed is small and specific: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as dual protagonists, a supporting cast of six named characters, and six regions across the state of Leonida.

What to watch

The fixed point everyone was pointing at has passed. Take-Two reported Q1 FY2027 on August 7, 2026, before market open. On the date, the release is emphatic: Strauss Zelnick’s quoted remarks restate the November 19 launch, and the company’s own future-lineup table lists the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for November 19, 2026. On GTA 6 demand specifically, it says nothing. There is no pre-order figure anywhere in it.

The same release reiterated the FY2027 net bookings range; we take the filing apart line by line in Take-Two’s Q1 FY2027 results.

The next dated event belongs to Rockstar. On August 6 it announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look for August 27. It premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET and arrived on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. ET. Rockstar has not called it Trailer 3, and the announcement post gives no runtime, format or contents.

The lesson, stated precisely

The Cyberpunk lesson is narrow and worth holding precisely. It isn’t “delays are good” and it isn’t “big open worlds break.” It’s that the expensive failure was shipping to hardware the game couldn’t run on, and the investor lawsuit over how that launch had been described. Rockstar has already declined the first half of that by cutting last-gen consoles entirely. The second half we find out about on November 19.
